Knowledge Valorisation (KV) is a central concept in the IAM4RE.eu project and plays a crucial role in redefining how research and innovation outputs are managed and transformed into real-world value. Moving beyond the traditional focus on intellectual property (IP) and revenue generation, knowledge valorisation focuses on the broader use and impact of intellectual assets (IAs), such as data, know-how, and software.

At its core, knowledge valorisation means turning research results into sustainable value that benefits the economy, society, and the broader innovation ecosystem. This includes enhancing the capacity of Public Research Organisations (PROs) and Academic Institutions (AcIs) to manage their intangible assets strategically and to implement new tools, policies, and services that support innovation and entrepreneurship.

A Shift from IP to IA Management

KV under IAM4RE.eu promotes a shift from narrow IP exploitation to a more comprehensive Intellectual Asset Management approach. This includes:
Recognising the full range of intellectual assets (data, software, know-how, skills, etc.)

  • Focusing on value creation rather than just commercialisation
  • Supporting early-stage academic entrepreneurship
  • Strengthening strategic autonomy in research and innovation

Guiding Principles and Alignment with EU Policy

The IAM4RE.eu project supports the implementation of the European Commission’s Council Recommendation on the Guiding Principles for Knowledge Valorisation. It contributes to the key Codes of Practice:

These frameworks help PROs and AcIs strengthen their innovation capacity by incorporating best practices in IP/IA management and standardisation.

Why Knowledge Valorisation Matters

KV enhances the exploitation of research results, boosts academic entrepreneurship, and improves access to finance for innovative spin-offs. It also ensures that European intellectual assets contribute more effectively to global standardisation efforts.

By promoting a culture of valorisation, IAM4RE.eu aims to empower institutions and individuals to transform knowledge into meaningful societal and economic impact, reinforcing Europe's role as a leader in innovation.

How IAM4RE.eu Will Support Knowledge Valorisation

IAM4RE.eu is developing a comprehensive set of tools and services to foster KV:

  • Training Suite on Knowledge Valorisation and Standardisation
  • MOOC to enhance academic entrepreneurship
  • Improved and new services for TTOs and intermediaries
  • Policy Guidelines to reform institutional frameworks
  • Train-the-Trainer programmes to scale capacity building across Europe

These will be deployed in 2026 to support researchers, spin-offs, and institutions in identifying opportunities, leveraging their results, and engaging with partners from both public and private sectors.

IAM4RE.eu engages a broad spectrum of stakeholders across the research and innovation landscape. To learn more about how different actors, from individual researchers to institutional leaders, can benefit from the project, visit our dedicated Who Benefits page.
