The IAM4RE Deep Dive Series complements the IAM4RE Training Suite by taking selected modules beyond the learning materials and into practice.

Each Deep Dive brings together leading experts from European institutions, academia, Standards Development Organisations (SDOs), technology transfer offices, industry and innovation support initiatives to discuss how Intellectual Assets Management (IAM), knowledge valorisation and standardisation are implemented in real-world settings.

Rather than repeating the module content, each session creates a space for dialogue, reflection and exchange around practical challenges, implementation experiences and current European policy developments.

The Deep Dive Series is one of the key engagement formats of the IAM4RE Community of Practice, complementing the Training Suite, mentoring services and other collaborative activities. Participants are invited to continue the discussion through the wider Community of Practice and to engage with the broader IAM4RE ecosystem.

Module 1

Building on Module 1 - Intellectual Asset Management, this Deep Dive explored the transition from traditional Intellectual Property (IP) management towards a broader and more strategic Intellectual Assets Management (IAM) approach. The discussion connected European policy with institutional implementation, highlighting how universities and research organisations can embed knowledge valorisation and Intellectual Assets Management within governance structures and organisational culture.

Module 3

Building on Module 3 of the IAM4RE Training Suite, this interactive Deep Dive explored the strategic role of standardisation in research and knowledge valorisation. Module 3 presented standardisation as one of several valorisation routes, alongside licensing and policy uptake. The session went a step further, looking at how research results feed into standard setting and how standards, in turn, shape innovation ecosystems. The discussion paid particular attention to the intellectual property rights (IPR) policies of Standards Developing Organisations (SDOs), from the disclosure of standard-essential patents (SEPs) to copyright ownership in standards.

Module 4

This interactive Deep Dive built on Module 4 of the IAM4RE Training Suite and tackled a persistent issue in research and innovation: moving research results closer to the market. A business development perspective on turning results into market opportunities met an investor’s view of what makes a result ready to scale. Participants shared their own experiences of positioning results within industry. The discussion questioned why market relevance is so often assumed rather than demonstrated. It explored when market validation should realistically happen, how to avoid building solutions with no clear user, and what industry actors actually look for in research outputs. Speakers also pointed to the typical gaps in market analysis within R&I projects and showed how solid market evidence shapes funding decisions and investor confidence.

Module 7

Building on Module 7 of the IAM4RE Training Suite, Business Development: Operationalising Valorisation, this Deep Dive moved beyond theory to look at what it really takes to turn research results into societal and economic impact. Instead of a lecture, the session took the form of a fireside chat with Anji Miller from LifeArc. Drawing on her long experience translating academic research into patient benefit across the life sciences, Anji shared how business development and knowledge valorisation work in practice. The conversation focused on how professionals can acquire translational skills. Anji explained how research outputs are assessed and matched with the right commercialisation pathway. She also discussed the training and fellowship schemes that help professionals strengthen these capabilities and take promising results beyond the laboratory.

Module 10

This Deep Dive built on Module 10: Project & Innovation Management and shifted the focus from concepts to practical implementation within research projects. The module showed where Intellectual Assets Management (IAM) and exploitation sit within the Horizon Europe project logic, and how standardisation fits alongside them. This session went further, looking at how these elements are actually put into practice in real projects, from proposal design to impact delivery. Participants explored how projects can look beyond generating results and design credible pathways towards uptake and long-term impact, with interoperability in mind. The session also showed how to embed these elements into Work Packages and innovation strategies from the earliest stages of a project.
