Explore the fundamentals of research commercialisation and the journey from invention to innovation.
What does it take to move a research result from the lab into real-world use? This module introduces the fundamentals of research commercialisation and explores the crucial difference between invention and innovation: having a novel idea is only the starting point, while creating value depends on whether that idea can respond to a real need and be successfully adopted.
You will examine the role of market understanding, stakeholder alignment and validation in shaping the commercial potential of research results. The module highlights why it is essential to understand who the potential users are, what problems they need to solve, and how research-based solutions can be tested and refined in response to real-world expectations.
Particular attention is given to the gap between technical readiness and market adoption. A result may be scientifically or technologically advanced, but that alone does not guarantee uptake. Factors such as user needs, demand, feasibility, stakeholder interest and evidence of value all influence whether a research outcome can progress towards implementation.
By the end of the module, you will have a clearer understanding of how research results move towards practical and commercial application and why successful innovation requires more than technical excellence alone.
