Module 3: Intellectual Asset Management

Learn how to identify, classify and strategically manage intellectual assets.

Research generates far more than publications or patents. Data, methods, software, know-how, networks, and other forms of knowledge can all become valuable intellectual assets, but only if they are recognised and managed strategically.

This module helps to identify and classify the intellectual assets emerging from research and understand how they can work together as part of a broader portfolio. Rather than looking at individual outputs in isolation, you will explore how different assets can complement one another and contribute to wider research, innovation and valorisation goals.

The module also tackles some of the key decisions researchers and institutions face:

  • Who owns an asset developed through collaboration?

  • When should knowledge be protected and when is openness more valuable?

  • How can access, sharing, and intellectual property choices affect future opportunities?

By the end of the module, you will be better equipped to see the bigger picture: understanding intellectual assets as an interconnected portfolio and making more strategic decisions about how they are protected, shared, developed and ultimately turned into impact.
