Module 1: Foundations of Research Capacity Building

Build a strong foundation in research capacity building by understanding the value of research outputs and intellectual assets beyond publications.

Research outputs take many forms, and publications are only one part of the picture. This module introduces the foundations of research capacity building by expanding the understanding of research outputs to include intellectual assets such as knowledge, data, methods, tools, know-how and other results that emerge throughout the research lifecycle.

You will explore how these assets can be identified, managed and positioned for future use, with particular attention to timing, protection, ownership and potential impact. The module also examines how decisions made during the research process can influence the opportunities to valorise results and create value beyond the immediate project or publication.

A central focus is the move towards a more strategic approach to research outputs: how to consider long-term relevance, uptake and impact from an early stage, rather than only once research results are finalised.

The module provides a foundation for understanding how intellectual assets can be recognised and managed as part of a broader research and knowledge valorisation strategy.
